Pivotal CF is continuing to deliver on the mission of a cloud-portable agile platform for applications and services. Pivotal CF minor releases are increasing in frequency due to Pivotal applying the same agile methodology that the platform enables customers to use to decrease time-to-market. There was a three month gap between Pivotal CF 1.0 and 1.1 and for Pivotal CF 1.2 the gap between releases has shrunk to under two months. Despite the smaller release cycle, there are many new capabilities which are being delivered more quickly to customers.
New VMware Platforms – VMware Hybrid Cloud Service and VMware vCloud Director 5.1.2+ are now supported platforms.
Pivotal HD Service for Pivotal CF – Dedicated Hadoop clusters with Pivotal HD and HAWQ are on-demand with instant access for development.
New Data Services – Redis, MongoDB, Neo4J, RiakCS and Elasticsearch can be deployed by Pivotal CF 1.2 as managed services for development use cases. These downloads should be on Pivotal Network soon and you may contact us for early access.
App Autoscaling Service (Beta) – The App Autoscaling service supports simple configuration of autoscaling policy for any application hosted in Pivotal CF.
Pivotal Insight for Pivotal CF (Beta) – Java applications using this APM service get performance metrics and traces simply by binding the service to their application.
Multiple vSphere Datastores – This release adds the ability to use multiple vSphere datastores increasing the overall disk capacity available to each Pivotal CF installation.
Large App Support – Configurable max application size on disk with validated support for 1GB apps.
Application Event Log With User Auditing – The CLI now shows the username associated for application event.
Monitoring Pivotal CF System Components with JMX – Pivotal Ops Metrics for VM and Pivotal CF system metrics via JMX is now Generally Available and out of Beta.
Developer Console Org Dashboard – The new page provides zoomed-out visibility for an Organization’s applications, services and quota consumption.
SSO to Service Dashboards – Elastic Runtime now supports a common SSO model for Service Dashboards. The MySQL Service has used this feature to provide a basic web dashboard for managing MySQL instances and integrated it with the Developer Console.
Simple Quota Management – Admins can now easily manage quotas in the CLI
New Language Support – A Go Buildpack is now available for supporting go applications and python and php buildpacks will be available on Pivotal Network to add to Pivotal CF 1.2 installations. Cloud Foundry has transitioned several components to go recently with great results.

VMware Hybrid Cloud Service (vCHS) and vCloud Director (vCD) are now supported platforms for Pivotal CF, the leading commercial distribution for Cloud Foundry. Multi-cloud portability is a key design tenant that differentiates Cloud Foundry. The platform directly interfaces with the IaaS layer to provide a high degree of automation and 4 layers of high availability not possible with traditional middleware. Pivotal CF on vCHS provides a platform that works the same way in VMware’s public cloud offering as it does for on-premises deployments on vSphere. When using vCHS, the IaaS is provided as-a-Service in VMware operated data centers making it ideal for additional compute and disaster recovery scenarios.
Throughout the development cycle, we continuously deliver Pivotal CF Elastic Runtime to Pivotal’s hosted offering Pivotal Web Services (PWS) which uses Amazon Web Services. PWS hardens Elastic Runtime with thousands of real-world applications before it is shipped to enterprise customers and is another proof point of cloud portability.
We are working on Pivotal CF 1.3 with many new features, services and capabilities. Future releases will improve networking and placement options, deeper VMware integrations, and more enterprise features. Download an evaluation on Pivotal Network and send us your feedback.
