Tweed Popup Menu Options

We recently added meta-tap for copying tweets. It seems to have some bugs and we are thinking about options.

Originally, we wanted to put Copy as an option in the tweet popup menu, but the menu is getting crowded. Currently, it can have

  • (Un)Favorite
  • Reply
  • Retweet
  • Conversations
  • Photos
  • Delete
  • (Un)mark
  • Link1
  • Link2

We are considering rearranging the items. There are two current ideas:

Option A

  • (Un)Favorite
  • Reply
  • Retweet
  • Conversations
  • Photos
  • Delete
  • (Un)mark
  • More (sub group)
    • Copy
    • Email
    • IM
  • Link1
  • Link2

or

Option B

  • (Un)Favorite
  • Reply
  • Retweet
  • Conversations
  • Photos
  • Delete
  • More (sub group)
    • Copy
    • Email
    • IM
  • Links (sub group)
    • Link1
    • Link2

Which do you prefer? Tell us at Survey Monkey

Voting ends Thursday, April 15.

OK, this is confusing. Will you keep the current meta-tap to copy?

And why is there no option for putting “copy tweet” on the main tweet popup menu?

Personally, I think “copy tweet” is way more important than the “conversations” item.

    @Erik,

We aren’t sure if we can keep the current meta-tap. It is a bit flaky, though this varies by user. There are some webOS things that seem to interfere.

On the Copy vs Conversations, this also varies a lot by user. It is one of the challenges of designing a simple popup menu.

  3. Jesus says:

I like Option 2, but instead of “More” how about “Send via”? I have no qualms with sub groups as long as they are categorized correctly. I really enjoy how RT is sub categorized.

  4. Erik says:

    @Christian

OK – thanks for clearing up the meta-tap issue.

As for redesigning the popup menu, I agree that different users have different priorities. Hence the need for a survey. So why not include an option for putting “copy” on the main menu? That way, you can test whether conversations outpolls copy.

Thanks for including us in your design decisions! All the best, Erik

I like Jesus’ suggestion to replace “More” with something a little more contextual. How about “Share via…”?

  6. portorikan says:

I love the meta-tap copy. If you can keep it please do. I have noticed that there is sometimes an in-adverted copy of a tweet. I think this has to do with webOS thought and advanced gestures turned on for switching cards (at least for me), but it’s my favorite.

A More or Send Via option is very nice indeed.

I’m going with a vote for Option A.

I don’t want to have to dig through too many sub-menus, and generally, there aren’t all that many links (again, in my experience) in a tweet that would require one to have to tap to open a menu to then tap a link again. Also, if there is only one link in a tweet, it would seem that it would get a bit annoying to have to tap, possibly scroll, tap, then tap again just to get to one link. Maybe if there were an option in preference for links where one could choose to have links grouped together a la New Retweets and old Retweets where you could group links under a prompt if you would like to have links linked together.

Anyway, thanks for the work and choice. This however reminds me of a quote I read recently…

  7. David Lopez says:

Great I hate the metatap. I vote optio B

  8. Christian Sepulveda says:

    @Robin, @Jesus.

The More group will probably have more items than just IM and Email, such as Copy ( a tweed to Clipboard). Hence the non-descript More

  9. Thomas Stache says:

I’m a bit surprised about “Copy” of all things being made so easily accessible.
I love how Twitterrific for iPhone has options for double/triple tap – which I have configured for conversations and favoriting. In Tweetie I looove the actions “under” the tweet when you swipe it to the side. In webOS I’ve only ever seen “Delete/Cancel” buttons there, I wonder if it’s possible to put smaller action buttons with icons there…

And in the whole time of using Twitter on the iPod touch, I have NEVER ever copied a tweet… so yeah, I’m surprised anyone is rooting for it! ;)

  10. Christian Sepulveda says:

    @Thomas,

We’ve had a lot of requests for the Copy feature. As far as your other comments, webOS is pretty standard on swipe-as-delete. We’ve thought about double tap, but that is a little buggy. (There is also tap-and-hold, which also isn’t so stable).

So, for stability and simplicity, we are going to do the subgroups on the popup menu.

  11. eulk says:

    Hi,
I like Option B. I would say that copy would be used much more than delete. Therefore, it’s likely best to swap them.

    thanks.

  12. AFreshOne says:

I like option B, but I would prefer the “main” menu didn’t change (except to disable more or links if there were none), then a “more” button to get to anything that changes.

  13. Neil says:

I’d prefer B but I don’t really love either. Ideally I would go for something like this:

    -(Un)Favorite
    -Reply
    -Share
    –Retweet
    –Copy
    –Email
    –Text/IM
    -Conversations
    -Photos
    -Links
    –Link1
    –Link2
    -#Tags
    –#Tag1
    –#Tag2

    (with swipe to delete)

  14. Neil says:

oops. formatting got messed up. trying again.

    -(Un)Favorite
    -Reply
    -Share
    –Retweet
    –Copy
    –Email
    –Text/IM
    -Conversations
    -Photos
    -Links
    –Link1
    –Link2
    -#Tags
    –#Tag1
    –#Tag2

    (with swipe to delete)

  15. Jesus says:

@Chris I just kind of see the “More” as too non-descript unless you plan to add other functions than sharing via IM, Email, and Clipboard. What’s wrong with “Share via> Clipboard” or “Copy” still works IMHO. If you’re copying you’re obviously most likely sharing the tweet through some medium, either facebook, or a forum or a write-up.

  16. Neil says:

@Jesus: that’s exactly what I was trying to propose. A “Share” menu that contains options to Retweet, Copy, Email, or Text/IM

  17. Danielle M says:

    I agree with Robin.

    “Robin on April 13, 2010 at 12:20PM
I like Jesus’ suggestion to replace “More” with something a little more contextual. How about “Share via…”?”

    And I choose option “B”

  18. Clayton says:

@Neil Yeah, I like the idea of the ‘Share’ submenu as well. Your list looked a bit huge at first, until i realized that you had some ‘-‘ and some’–‘. ‘Share’ is a great sub-category, imo. But as for A and B, I’m voting B, there’s no reason to have all the links/hashtags in the main list, since you can simply and quickly tap them directly within the tweet anyway; might as well keep the pop-up looking as clean as possible.

  19. D_Summit says:

I voted for B, but I would hope that if the tweet has only 1 link that it would not be forced into a sub-menu.

  20. Jesus says:

@Neil I just noticed your list, very good idea and good use of submenus. The only thing that might concern me is the retweet option. If RT style is set to “Prompt”, Old/New would be a third level menu and I’m not sure how well that’s look.

  21. @Prenotes says:

I am happy with meta tap functions but understand the issues. Really like the copy function but it could easily be under a “Share Via” menu item The last option because it is for everything else). My thinking is that the main tools used to consume the tweet Links photos and the stuff needed to understand the tweet should be a the first level (including RT). Is it possible to have a links sub menu IF there are more than two links? I voted option B

Thank you for sharing this valuable information. Right now I’m busy with my project web site development and search engine optimization and then I’m planning to go to Canada for free web host final project. That’s why these days I’m too busy with my documents and can not afford to search for these same things domain name registration
    . Keep sharing…

  23. Mark says:

I’m enchanted to visit this site after stretched time which was because of my cheap vps project. I have noticed here insertion of web site design editorials. This is an excellent amendment which will leave good blow on user’s who are voracious for these topics. I was in quest of domain registration and internet service providers info for several days and lastly I got it at my preferred website.

  24. Robert says:

Hey, ever since yesterday, my tweed won’t launch on my palm pre… It will prompt but it stays in that hovering phase & never actually initiates. I did the update today hoping it would fix it, but no such luck. Do I need to redownload the app?
